Water using techniques of Yoga: JALANETI & JALADHOUTI

  1. Jalaneti:

                   Jalaneti is an important method for treatment of the nose and throat diseases which are usually caused by the accumulation of impurities in the nasal passage. Jalaneti is the process of cleansing the air passage of the nostrils and the throat by washing them with tepid saline water.

How to do Jalaneti:

  • Take a clean pot with capacity of 1-2 litre of liquid and a nozzle type arrangement for pouring water in nostrils,
  • Heat the water to a temperature such that half a teaspoonful of salt can be easily dissolved in it and it should be passed through nostrils without any heating sensation,
  • Mix the salt with the lukewarm drinking water,
  • Stand up and tilt your head slightly to the right. Insert the nozzle of the pot in the left nostril and let the water flow into it. Inhale and exhale through the mouth, allowing the water to flow out through the right nostril.
  • Reverse this process by tilting your head to the left and letting the water flow from the right to the left nostril.
  • Repeat the process 2-3 times for proper cleaning of nostrils.

Precautions:

  • Jalaneti should be practiced only in the morning.
  • Start with a small quantity of water.
  • Usage of 1-2 litre water should be done only after mastering it or under supervision.

  • Jalaneti helps in the treatment of conditions such as sore throat, cough & cold, sinusitis, migraine, headache and inflammation of the nasal membranes.
  • It also helps in keeping the head cool and improving vision.

 

  1. Jala Dhouti/Vamana Dhouti/Kunjal:

Jala dhouti is a treatment method for cleansing the interior of the stomach and remove any unwanted food ingested recently. It is similar to modern day flushing of radiators of vehicles to remove the scales formed inside by using how water in reverse.

How to do Jala Dhouti:

  • Take a clean pot with capacity of 2-3 litre of liquid or 6-7 glasses of water (the quantity may vary based on individual capacity to drink water in one go),
  • Heat the water to a temperature such that half a teaspoonful of salt can be easily dissolved in it and it should be passed through nostrils without any heating sensation,
  • Mix the salt with the lukewarm drinking water,
  • Bend your knees slightly and drink four to six glasses of water or till the water seems to be filled high in the food pipe,
  • Then stand up, bend forward and insert the middle and index fingers of the right hand into the mouth until they touch the uvula. Ideally, the placing hand inside the mouth is enough to bring vomiting sensation, if not tickle uvula until you feel a vomiting sensation.
  • The saline water thus ejected will bring up bile and other toxic matter with it.
  • Repeat the process till all the water is vomited out.
  • You can do it once a week or as and when necessary.

Precautions:

  • People suffering from problems of high acidity should do it without mixing salt to water.
  • People with problems of high blood pressure, ulcers or any other heart trouble should avoid doing jala dhouti.

  • Jala dhouti helps in cleansing the stomach and removing excessive bile, constipation, and gastric troubles.
  • It helps in getting relief from headaches, nervous system weaknesses and treating conditions of chronic cold, cough, and asthma.
