SKELETAL ORGAN SYSTEM
PURPOSE/FUNCTION:
It is composed of 206 bones (in an adult) and network of tendons, ligaments and cartilages to support the body structure, help in body movement, storage of calcium and endocrine regulation.

COMPONENTS:
1. AXIAL BONES: The 80 axial bones form the vertical axis of the body. They include the bones of the head, vertebral column, ribs and breastbone or sternum.
2. APPENDICULAR BONES: The 126 appendicular bones includes the free appendages and their attachments to the axial skeleton. The free appendages are the upper and lower extremities, or limbs, and their attachments which are called girdles.
